While you were sleeping...

actually, while I was sleeping...

.... my parents cut my shaggy hair. I like the new look.

11 Months and Growing...

Well, well, well. Hello, faithful readers. You'll have to excuse my scribe lately. I think he's been really busy at something called "work" -- don't know what that is, but I'll have to look into at some point...

In the meantime, I've been blossoming like the fertile Iowa soil from which I was birthed. Wait a minute. That's not me. And I'm mixing metaphors. Well, I am heavy and tall and getting my third - yes, count'em - third tooth. No, it's actually not on the top. I am going for the uneven 'street' feel with my dentures. You can check out this picture of me for a pretty good view of Tooth #3 (Dente Numero Tres - for our Spanish readers following along. Me llamo Ezra):

Words and Airplanes

There really is a lot to catch up on. We got the tooth covered. Check. Well, there is my - how you say it - vocabulary to discuss. Okay, okay, I can't actually talk. But certain synapses and nerves are starting to fire and I am gaining word recognition. I believe my parents picked up on them in this order:

1. Airplane
(if I hear a noise in the sky, like this (see plane in distance):

then I look up and point like this:

2. Ketubah (I point to it above my parent's' bed every morning)
3. Clock (What time is it? My parents say and I point to the clock in the bathroom)
4. Smoke Alarm (It blinks)
5. Banana (Need I say more?)

Oh, yes, I point. I used to point indiscriminately at everything. But that is like so 10 and 1/2 months old. Now I am 11 months and I point at what I want: avocado, banana and usually cheese. Despite my parents' best efforts (and those have been intense and unrelenting), I still refuse to point to either my mom or my dad and say "mama" or "dada" but that is not for lack of trying on their part.

Singing

I may not be using words but I do have some consonants and vowels down. And just yesterday I sang my first lyrics to a song I recognized. The song is "La la la Lemon" by the Barenaked Ladies on For the Kids. The refrain goes, predictably, "la la la" and when that happens, I sing right along. Except on the occassions when my parents have the video recording equipment out. Then I sit there like a mute. I caaaaan't. I mean, they are just so easy to manipulate those two. That one drives them bonkers.

Scooting and Standing (kind of)

I am still scooting around like a fiddler crab, no walking or "regular crawling" yet. But I am pulling myself up a lot on couches and on a new toy table good ol' mom and dad bought me:

Eating

My parents recently took out a home-equity loan to feed me. I mean, I mean, I'm like a 7-Eleven, I'm open 24-7. Wait, wait, I got one more, one more: I'm so fat, I got my own gravitational pull.

I like eating. No shame. No self-conscious moments. Bring it. Bring it on.

Lately I have been going to town on organic cheese. I've had cheddar, monterey jack, blue cheese. Okay, I didn't have blue cheese yet or even brie but soon. I love that stuff. I also eat tofu. Avocado, I can do all day long. And banana, I know that word too. I see fresh bananas come in the kitchen and I am pointing away. I could've eaten a full one yesterday but Dad, fearful for my Cohen gastrointestinal system, wouldn't let me.

Today Mom made me baked sweet potato fries. They were 'licous:

(ha ha! that one's in my mouth!)

... and I even shared them with my mom:

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!!!!

Look at this amazing outfit my Mom made. I cooperated with her craftiness (she's always up to something) but I gotta tell you that all my shots weren't exactly, um, perfect.

Take a look at the outtakes:

Christmas and What Not

Well, all, I am back from North Carolina after having taken more airplane flights and seen more states than many adults have -- all in 10 months. 5 round trips now. I handle it pretty well. Its cooler when there are other kids on the flight because then I can stare at them. Stare. It freaks some of them out and they cry. I just stare..and smile at them.

Apparently, my progress is growing by leaps and bounds on all fronts. Amazingly I can do more tricks more often, I am growing exponentially. Big word.

For example, you say: "Airplane"
I look up into the sky and point. (There are a lot of airplanes over NYC!)

Did you say point? That's right, y'all, point. Check it:
From Short 11 Months

I love pointing. I point at Mom, I point at Dad, I point at the Wall, at the Window, at my parents' Ketubah on the wall.

I also say "Up" - it is arguably the first word that I "understand" (Wink, wink - that's the 'official' story my parents believe and I'm sticking to it.) Strangly, though, my parents have stopped using words that begin with "sh" and end with "it" and other words begininng with "F" and stuff. Hmmm. I wonder what those mean. I've been babbling for months - I have been doing the "Mamamamamam" and "Dadadadadad" routing for a while and it seems like I am finally figuring out who goes with who.

Oh, yeah, Ezra.

I know who that is.

Ezzie too.

Sometimes I turn and look.

Sometime I just ignore them!

So we were down in Greensboro, NC for Christmas with my Mom's extended clan at my Uncle Brandon's and Aunt Sally's house. This was my first Christmas after celebrating my first Hanukkah at home. I think that's the deal. Hanukkah at home and Christmas with Mom's folks. Cool. I liked it. The tree was beautiful, I just wish I could have pulled it down. The stockings were fun and I would've taken everything from everyone else's stocking if my Dad didn't stop me. Here I am trying to get into the stockings:

Took a nice walk to the First Presbyterian Church and hit up their "Tot" playground. They didn't even know I was there.... Sneaky. It was AWESOME. Got to go on my first slide. I could've done it all day. I wasn't scared at all like I sometimes get.

Recap: Pretty Tree, Family and Presents. What's not to love? Thanks everyone for my toys! They rock.
